Absolutist Governments essays The rise of absolute monarchs in the seventeenth century was a result of numerous unrelated things and events. The development of the idea of the Divine Right of Kings, and the publishing of Thomas Hobbes work, Leviathan, provided the justification the Monarchs needed to further their pursuit of wealth, land, and trade opportunities. It also provided the way to appease their conscience, as they overtook and abused indigenous peoples. The breakdown of the feudal system was throwing country after country into unrest. This also helped to make this idea of absolutism popular, even within the general population. In France around the middle of the seventeenth century, a revolution against the current monarch, Cardinal Mazarin, threw France into disarray. When the Cardinal died in 1661, Louis XVI (whom the Cardinal had been governing for), took power and became the strong absolute ruler that France had been looking for. He took hold of the country and put himself at the head of the government, and as a result order was restored. In this way, Louis XVI instigated an absolutism that was popular with the citizens of France (p. 432-433, Textbook). There were many absolutist monarchs throughout Europe during this time period, including Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. Although England had not tended towards an absolute monarchy, eventually when James I came to power, this idea prevailed there as well (p.420, Textbook). This absolutist government was justified by Jacques-Benigne Bossuet, who believed in a theory called the Divine Right of Kings. He argued that kings ruled because they were chosen by God to do so, and that these kings were accountable to no person except God. The king ruled by virtue of Gods authority, so he should be obeyed in all things. No group, whether the nobles, the people on the street, or even Parliament, had the right to question this rule, for to do so was to rebel against God (p.43...

Abortion From Perspectives of Functionalist - Research Paper Example The paper has identified that from perspectives of   Functionalist we must engage abortion from a macro perspective in terms of how it affects the whole of society and its relationship between societal parts. Abortion, in general, is legal, but when viewing it from the macro perspective, it becomes alarming. From a functionalist perspective, little else is seen. This vision of the functionalist has sparked a growing concern that has not only swept the nation but has found its way into legislation to the thwart the taxpayer funding of abortions nationwide. The functionalist has a natural call for accountability. The perception is that abortions outside of cases of rape, incest and of concerns for health are an act of personal irresponsibility fueled by the passive acceptance of low moral standards. Acc ountability is imposed through removing the means financial absolution when it comes to acquiring abortions. It is felt that social systems work to maintain a social equilibrium. With more than half of the Black babies in New York being aborted, that equilibrium is lost with the given community. The lost equilibrium is viewed as the loss of social norms that must be returned to the previous state through social control mechanisms; in this case, legislation. The functionalist also views the individual from a perspective that enables how the individual is influenced by larger, more reaching social forces. The pro-life campaign that resulted in this billboard is a prime example of how the functionalist utilizes a social tool to influence the individual. While it is not a matter of whether the functionalist in this case is right or wrong, it demonstrates an example of the functionalist at work on a macro scale. However, the functionalist is not the only perspective in viewing abortions in New York’s Black communities. Conflict From the conflict perspective, the billboard was a result of the fact that the New York inner-city Black community has insufficient resources in which to cope with the reproductive health of women. The result is an abortion rate that now â€Å"outpaces life.† When compared to other ethnic groups, Blacks undergo disproportionately more abortions. Because the Black community lacks the resources of the richer communities, the abortion rates are higher. Abortions are thus performed for economic reasons as the Black community falls further behind the economic elite of America. The unemployment rate for Blacks aged 16 to 19 is 41.6%. From a conflict perspective, it goes to reason abortion rates will be higher in those who lack the means of financial provision.

Gains and Losses in Educating Rita The question of what Rita gains in Educating Rita is quite easy to answer. What she loses is less obvious. Her intention is to gain a college education and she largely succeeds in this. On the way you could say she loses her job and her husband, but it is worth asking whether these are really losses to the person Rita, or rather Susan, becomes. Â   The play follows just over a year in Rita's life and shows her gradual progress in an English Literature course. At first Rita knows she wants to do the course but not how to do well in it. It seems that she would rather do anything but talk about literature in the early lessons but she gradually gains confidence and skill in her speech and writing. A good example of her progress is her response to Macbeth. Initially she does not understand how to write about it and produces a 'crap' essay. Frank explains that the essay is not bad in terms of a personal response to the play but it does not fulfil the criteria of the course she is doing. Rita accepts this and resolves to write the essay again. Â   Rita's education goes far beyond just reading and responding to books however. When she first comes to the university she is impressed and even a little intimidated by the intelligent people she sees around her. By the end of the play she is able to tell them when they are speaking nonsense and join in their conversations as an equal. Success in her literature course has thus given her greater confidence in the wider world. Â   Willy Russell shows that for Rita, education involves a move out of her original social class and away from the values of her family and friends. This could be seen as a loss for her, but in moving beyond her working class background she gains in self-respect and self-confidence so that she is better able to handle the challenges of life. The most obvious thing she loses is her husband. From what Rita says, they seem to get on well enough, but Denny doesn't understand her wish to be educated.

In this world, we can clearly see that people have secrets and they are willing to Ill, cheat and even kill to get where they want to be and to be their very best. No one is who they seem to be and everyone has something to hide. Throughout the film, there are 3 main characters that have something to conceal and these characters are Jerome Eugene Morrow, VincentFreeman and Doctor Lamar. Jerome Eugene Morrow is a very relentless and arrogant person but on the inside he is caring, Vincent Freeman is an Invalid' who dreams of flying to Titan and to achieve his dreams, he has to become a towered ladder' with the help of Eugene, and Doctor Lamar helps Vincent achieve his dreams by concealing Vincent secret. Jerome Eugene Morrow is a valid in Cattle. He Is wh at is considered as close to perfection that's possible. After a suicide attempt, It left Eugene a crippled, depressed and an arrogant person.Niccole proves this when he Is calling the policeman a flatfoot†. He places this personality upon himself because he Is too scared to show anyone the real him; sensitive and caring. Throughout the film, we see that he in fact conceals his true personality by helping Vincent. The amount of energy he put into helping Vincent, shows us that on the inside he is actually a caring friend who is willing to sacrifice his life to help others. From this we see that no one is who they seem, and Eugene is even willing to lend his own identity to another person.Only the Valid' class is told they can truly succeed in the world of ‘Cattle', so if an ‘invalid' tries to succeed, they must put their lives around the concealment of their genetic identity. Niccole places Vincent, an ‘invalid' whose dreams are achievable only in the Valid' world. In order to enter that world, Vincent becomes a ‘borrowed ladder' using Eugene Morrow's Identity. The opening scene of the film shows this dramatically, as we see Vincent hair and skin painfully removed In an extreme close-up. Vincent does this routine every day and It Is courageous. Learn more about this routine In a later, slowly paced sequence that details the processes the system Vincent must go through each day just to reach his goals. Doctor Lamar is the main doctor at Cattle, and although he lies under the radar, he is a crucial part of Vincent Journey to Titan.When Lamar says â€Å"right men don't hold it with their left†, it suggests to the viewer that he is in fact fully aware o f Vincent true identity, and that he has most likely known for a while. At the beginning of the film It seems that Lamar Is convinced, as is everyone else In Cattle, that Vincent Is a true valid. However, near the end, It becomes obvious he has known the truth all along. Lamar Lies and effectively cheats the system by turning a blind eye to Vincent true identity and allowing him to continue on his journey. My Leadership Style At Georgia Southern University

Throughout my time in the Lead and Serve Living and Learning Community I have been able to further develop my leadership skills and utilize these skills in various situations. Before coming to Georgia Southern University, my leadership style focused on teamwork, hard work, efficiency, and time management. Through my experiences in Lead and Serve, I have found that there are many other attributes needed to be an efficient and good leader. These attributes include open communication, open-mindedness, patience, inclusiveness, and responsibility. Through my interview I conducted with my older brother, Nathaniel, for the Live the Change class I found hard work and dedication to be crucial when leading others. I needed to work hard at whatever I was trying to accomplish in order to both inspire those I was leading to work hard as well as ensure efficiency in my own work. Teamwork has also been crucial to leadership since working with the team you lead is necessary for the group to run smoo thly. Finally, I found time management to be important because if I waited until the last minute to do something it affected not only me but those I was leading and caused us to not do our best in the short amount of time. I have also found that open communication is important to not only being a leader but also to everyday life through my experiences in the Lead and Serve community.
